You Scored 280 in JAMB? Here is Why You Still Need to Read for Post-UTME

So, the JAMB results are out, and you smashed it. You saw 250, 270, or maybe even 300+ on your screen. Your parents are already calling relatives, and you’ve basically started pricing hostel space in your mind.

First of all, congratulations! Beating JAMB is no small feat. But before you pack up your books and start binge-watching movies, we need to tell you the hard truth: JAMB is only half the battle.

Every year, thousands of students with very high JAMB scores end up losing their admission to students who scored way lower. Why? Because they relaxed and totally bombed their Post-UTME.

If you want to secure your name on the first batch admission list, here is what you need to do next so that "village people" won't use your admission to play.

1. Understand Your School's Screening Pattern

Not all federal or state universities do things the same way. Before you start reading blindly, you need to know how your school of choice conducts its screening.

  • Aptitude Test Schools: Universities like UNILAG, OAU, and UNILORIN will set another exam for you. Sometimes, it’s even harder than JAMB because they mix core subjects with Current Affairs and Logical Reasoning.
  • O'Level Grading Schools: Some schools don't write exams; they calculate your aggregate using your JAMB score and the number of A's and B's in your WAEC or NECO result.

Find out exactly what your first-choice institution does. Talk to senior colleagues or join legit campus WhatsApp groups.

2. Hunt for the Right Past Questions

If your school writes an actual Post-UTME exam, do not make the mistake of using only JAMB past questions to prepare. Post-UTME questions have a totally different vibe.

Most universities repeat their specific questions year after year. Get the official Post-UTME past questions for your specific course and university. If you applied for Medicine in UNIBEN, get the UNIBEN Post-UTME past questions for science students. Cram the format, understand the timing, and get used to how they set their traps.

3. Don't Ignore Your JAMB CAPS

This one cannot be overemphasized. You can score 350 in JAMB and 100% in Post-UTME, but if your WAEC or NECO result is not uploaded on your JAMB CAPS, you are not getting admitted. Period.

If you used "Awaiting Result" during your JAMB registration, make sure you rush to an accredited CBT centre the exact week your WAEC/NECO results are released to upload them. Always log in to your JAMB portal to double-check that your O'level subjects are actually showing.

4. Keep the Momentum Going

It is very hard to pick up your books again after the stress of JAMB, but don't dull. Treat Post-UTME like an entirely new exam.

Set a daily reading schedule. You don't need to read 8 hours a day anymore, but dedicating 2 to 3 hours daily to reviewing your core subjects will keep your brain sharp.

The Bottom Line

Your high JAMB score gives you a massive advantage, but it does not guarantee automatic admission. The universities use Post-UTME to filter out the crowd because the slots are limited. Keep your head down, study smart, secure that aggregate score, and we will see you on campus!
